Each month we are putting an Ayogi in the spotlight. This month, meet Mala—our Director of Client Services and Projects! Mala’s worked in Project Management in the tech industry for the last decade. She started out at a web development shop coding email templates but, with her background in marketing, kept daydreaming about what marketing meant in the emerging digital space. Realizing her skills would translate to project management, she made the shift and never looked back. Fast-forward a few years to when Mala was first introduced to Ayogo:
“I hired Ayogo as a vendor when I was working at another organization and was really impressed with the breadth of knowledge and expertise that they had. I was then introduced to Michael Fergusson and we shopped around for shared office spaces together. That endeavour didn’t work out, but fate struck when I was looking for jobs to come back to Vancouver—I was really excited to see that Ayogo was looking for someone with my skill set. The rest is history!”
Now as Director of Client Services & Projects at Ayogo, Mala wears multiple hats. She works within our internal production team to organize resources, set schedules, budgets, and deadlines; she leads our client management and ensures all external deliverables are up to our standard and mark of approval; and she helps to improve process by looking for efficiencies and structure where we can work smarter as a team. “I set the stage to bring out the best talent in the people I am working with. It’s a lofty goal, but I work with such great people who make that goal a reality. Everyone at Ayogo is extraordinary, and it’s a pleasure to work with these smart and funny people everyday.”
Q: What are you hoping to achieve while at Ayogo?
I hope to be able to make incremental and significant shifts that help our team work more efficiently while also establishing strong relationships with our clients. We work with a lot of great organizations and there’s always an opportunity to collaborate more; I help to channel all of that blue sky thinking into strategic projects that we want to move forward with as an organization. Concurrently, we’re building a really smart team that works well together, and has fun while they are doing it.”
Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest challenge in managing projects for a company that makes behavior changing software for the healthcare industry?
Knowing that it’s not always permanent. We take a very agile and iterative approach towards how we are developing our platforms and products as we venture forward in this emerging field, and that can make estimating and budgeting challenging. However, being able to pivot based on new market data and user research is essential.”
Q: What advice do you have for those who are looking to start their career in Project Management and Client Services, specifically within the healthcare space?
It’s an important thing for people in the industry to give back in terms of mentorship and education opportunities, so figure out what you want to do, find someone who seems to be doing that, and ask them about their journey. Everyone’s story is different and Project Management candidates can have a variety of backgrounds, especially in the digital space. Project Management principles can be applied in a variety of different industries and types of organizations, so finding something you’re passionate about doing is key!”
